We are delighted to showcase the latest paintings by Joanne Last, along with a new collection of thrown ceramic vessels by Clare Conrad.
Joanne Last's latest collection of acrylic canvases sees a return to more representational coastal landscapes after several years of abstraction. But rather than a backward step, Last's new paintings are an exciting marriage of the two genres, with the process of 'painting' still very much to the fore. By experimenting with new techniques and ideas, Last has achieved a balance between a poetic 'sense of place' and the visceral qualities of paint and 'painting'.
Clare Conrad's new collection of wheel-thrown, altered ceramic vessels is inspired chiefly by the elemental nature of Cornwall’s land and sea and the transient light and weather that keeps it in constant flux. The 'weathered' surface quality of Conrad's vessels is achieved by layering textured coloured slips – in contrast to their satin matt interiors.
