Overview

"I have loved St Ives ever since I first sighted it, aged 18, from the train as it approached Carbis Bay. I remember it so well - a brilliant, sunny day, the 'Island' spread out with sea all around it… breath-taking. The colours, light, and textures have been a major influence in my work: the subtle colours showing through shallow water; tonal gradations of sand and pebbles as they change from wet to dry; dramatic chiaroscuro lighting; and the effects of sun, wind and salt spray on harbourfront paintwork. I try to evoke these features in the surfaces of my pots."

Born in 1948, Herefordshire-based ceramicist Clare Conrad graduated from the University of the West of England, Bristol in 1987. Her innovative ceramics have been shown in solo and group exhibitions in the UK and internationally since 1989.

Conrad's works have been featured in many ceramics publications and are in many public and private collections in the UK and abroad, including Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery; Lotherton Hall, Leeds City Art Galleries; and Keramiek Centrum, The Netherlands. She is a Fellow of The Craft Potter's Association and has been represented exclusively in Cornwall by the Porthminster Gallery since 2008.
