'In making this body of work I have drawn on visits I have made to Cornwall, walking and exploring the coast. I have been coming to the area since I was a child, and found in its light and landscape a compelling starting point for painting. Alongside the vastness and freedom of the sea, the sky and the empty rugged areas between them, there is also a sense of closeness and compactness in terms of scale, and it is partly in this combination that the landscape is so distinctive.'

Freya Horsley was born in Bath in 1979 and studied at University of Central England (BA Hons Fine Art – First Class Honours, 1998–2001) and University of York (MA History of Art – Distinction and Dissertation Prize, 2002–03).
