Overview

'Sometimes I paint for no other reason than for the love of painting itself. Its the potential of making something entirely how you want to make it, that I enjoy. The freedom in this is beautiful and rarely found in other things I do.  I love colour. Why do some colour combinations just work when others dont? I enjoy exploring this question, developing structure and tension can elevate things further.

My work has typically been about making plein air paintings that relay something of the experience of being out in open space and the feelings felt at the time.

When approaching these recent studio paintings, my intention was to try and empty my mind and create something abstract and indescribable - to see where I go. But by the end of making each piece, although quite abstract, familiar aspects of the Cornish landscape that I know and love started to emerge. I find this approach both refreshing and affirming because I enjoy where I live in so much. My appreciation for this landscape seems to be engraved on my brain;

the subconscious mind is a fascinating thing and can often lead to something meaningful when I trust in it.'

- Saul Cathcart for Porthminster Gallery 2023 collection

Saul Cathcart is a landscape artist who lives and works on the atmospheric North Cornish Coast. He paints abstracted plein air paintings of a landscape he’s known and treasured for over 30 years. With his own intuitive yet observational style he produces work filled with colour, depth and emotion.
