‘In this new series of work painted for the Porthminster Gallery in St Ives I have returned to my favourite theme: the Cornish coast.
‘I endeavour to capture the sea air and coastal light of the area using colour, delicate layering and drawn elements to evoke the vibrant skies and landscape of St Ives and West Cornwall.
‘There is a strong abstract element to the work. While they may begin as depictions of specific places during the painting process they take on a life of their own - houses and shapes are painted over but the imprint remains visible, creating archaeology beneath the painted surface.
‘Most of these paintings use acrylic paint on board or occasionally paper or canvas on board. Fine layers of paint are built up, stripped away and drawn into until the desired effect is achieved.’ |
